Babak Karimi

About Babak Karimi

Babak Karimi is an Iranian actor and film editor, born in 1960, who came to acting relatively late after a long career behind the camera. He is the son of the Iranian stage actor Nosrat Karimi.

From the editing room to the screen

Karimi spent his school years in Tehran before moving to Italy, where he studied art and later taught cinema at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. He worked as a director, cinematographer and editor on documentary projects in several countries, and edited feature films including Babak Payami's Secret Ballot.

His screen career changed direction after Asghar Farhadi saw him in Tickets (2005), the portmanteau film co-directed by Abbas Kiarostami. Farhadi cast him as the judge in A Separation (2011). Karimi shared the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival with the male cast of that film.

Work with Farhadi and beyond

Karimi returned to Farhadi's work in The Past (2013) and The Salesman (2016). His other film credits include Fish & Cat, Death of the Fish, Yalda, a Night for Forgiveness, No Choice, Until Tomorrow, Bucharest and The Wastetown. His role in Shahr-e Gheseh Cinema earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 38th Fajr Film Festival.
