About Mehran Modiri

Mehran Modiri, born in Tehran in 1967, is an Iranian director, actor, singer, producer and television host. He is the dominant figure in Iranian TV comedy of the past three decades. He has won the Hafez Award ten times, the record in the award's history. In 2009 Newsweek ranked him the 20th most powerful man in Iran.

From radio to television comedy

Modiri, whose family comes from Arak, started acting in theatre at 16 and appeared in plays such as Hamlet, Arsenal and Pension. In 1989 he joined radio, where he narrated the Night Stories programme for six years. In 1993 he made his first comedy programme for Nowruz with Dariush Kardan. Nowruz 72 marked the start of his fame. He went on to act in and direct a long series of state-television comedies, including Saat-e Khosh, Barareh Nights and later the home-video hit Bitter Coffee. These shows launched the careers of many of the comic actors found elsewhere on Pardeh. In cinema he was nominated for the Crystal Simorgh for Best Actor for There's Always a Woman Involved (2007).
