Crime, clues and consequences
These Persian series and films begin with a crime or a serious disruption — a murder, a disappearance, a dangerous debt or a power struggle. The investigation or the aftermath becomes the main story. Atmosphere, character and moral pressure matter more than constant action. If you like stories that stay with the consequences of a crime rather than only the chase, these titles are a good place to start.

A village murder investigation and a pattern of disappearances offer different ways into a mystery. Choose the setting and the kind of question you want to follow, then begin with the first available episode so that the clues arrive in their intended sequence.

Thriller · Mystery
A disappearance near a doctor’s home opens onto a wider pattern of missing people. The story expands from one incident into a larger network of connections.
Not every story here is a detective puzzle. Debt, a threatened reunion and a struggle over workers’ rights put people under different kinds of pressure. Compare the personal stakes with the larger conflict rather than expecting the same sort of crime story from every selection.
Crime · Social drama
A gifted AI specialist has an investment algorithm — and a debt that technical talent alone cannot erase. The series follows the pressure that builds when skill and financial danger meet.
Crime · Social drama
After fifteen years in prison, Naeem wants to see his daughter. That reunion is only the beginning. The series explores what is left of a family after a long separation and the new pressures that appear.
They treat crime or conflict as something that changes ordinary lives and relationships. The focus stays on the people under pressure and the choices they make, not only on solving a puzzle. Some are set in the present, others in earlier decades, which gives different atmospheres to the same kind of tension.

Iranian crime drama has rarely been about the gunfight. Its strongest stories start with a single wrong turn, such as a debt, a missing person or an object that should never have left a drawer, and then follow how far the damage spreads. The four picks above (Yal, Azazil, Aban and The Lion Skin) are the natural starting point. Pardeh's catalogue goes further, and the titles below are grouped by the kind of question they ask.
Criminal: Persian Style (Eteraf Mikonam) is an anthology. In each of its 10 episodes, a new suspect sits across the table from the same interrogation team, so you can watch one chapter at a time. Berta: Dastan-e Yek Aslahe is built the opposite way. An old gun goes missing, a police officer loses the life he had because of it, and years later a string of murders is committed with the same weapon. Kuri (Blindness) begins at a wedding, where counterfeit alcohol leaves guests blind and several dead, and one of the victims is the child of an influential family. Kankel is a quieter police mystery about raw materials vanishing from a factory, losses that keep being quietly covered up until the police get involved. It is written and directed by Ramtin Lavafipour.
Qoorbaghe opens on the night of Chaharshanbe Suri. Three young men use a wounded officer's gun to rob a childhood classmate who has become rich and mysterious. Vahshi (The Savage), written and directed by Houman Seyyedi, follows an ordinary mine worker after one devastating incident threatens his life. Among the films, Shabgard turns a car hitting a stray dog on a dark side road into a police search with life-changing results. Bibadan, Morteza Alizadeh's first feature, is about a disappearance, a trial and the families on both sides of a death sentence.
Not every case is grim. In Cheshm o Goosh Basteh (Unsophisticated) the only two witnesses to a murder are a blind man who heard the shot and a deaf man who saw it. Asb Heyvan Najibi Ast, Abdolreza Kahani's black comedy, gives a prisoner 24 hours of freedom and a group of strangers with plans of their own.
If you want closure in one evening, pick a film. If you prefer a slow build, start a series from episode one, because clues and loyalties are planted early. If you only have an hour, the anthology structure of Criminal: Persian Style is the safest choice.
